“Heart rate back to normal again after Goodsync backup software completely saved my bacon this morning. 😨 This is your timely reminder to regularly BACKUP YOUR WORK, folks!”

Another prime example why backups are important:

Just the idea of lost work on Bob’s awesome illustrations makes my skin crawl.

Wow. ST3000NM0033 just 4.3 years shy came back with a 188 Command_Timeout of 60130459662.

This server houses either a vermin nest of some sort or someone fcked up plugging a gorram cable. Either way it’s pants on fire.

Update:

2nd act as .

We complained.
They rejected,
no error to be detected.

Bewildered we insisted,
and grumbling they assisted.

They pulled out all the disks,
and concluded all at risk.

Wait, what?
Only one was shut!

Now we’ve none,
the raid is gone.

Next is a letter we have to sign,
that loosing all our data is just fine.

You wonder if we have a backup?
oc, always prepared for such a f… mess.

Sorry. I’m not used to this sort of chaos engineering.

Manton Reese notes when evaluating new social networks (like WTSocial I assume) he looks to these four traits…

Well, that’s almost still right. The nice thing about ActivityPub is that it doesn’t have to be e.g. Mastodon or even “their servers”. Nowadays even blogs can speak this, or at least enough so followers can subscribe to the “instance” that is in fact just a blog. It’s another outlet, like RSS, but has support for subscribing and commenting built in without the need to create another account. Exciting times.
